In a call to action, Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) Dean Emeritus Wayne P. Hughes, Jr. discussed the impact of rigid bureaucracy on maritime innovation and how, despite these challenges, innovation does and can continue to thrive. "Trust your experience, instincts and knowledge to keep following that path of innovation together," Dean Emeritus Hughes advised faculty and students.


Stafford, Va. -- Marines with Headquarters Marine Corps Intelligence department gave a live demonstration of new technologies Dec. 9, as part of the Marine Corps Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Enterprise Accelerator program.


MONTEREY, Calif. (NNS) -- The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) said farewell to 326 graduates, including 39 international students from 16 nations, earning 328 advanced degrees during its Fall Quarter Commencement Ceremony at King Auditorium, Dec. 16.

SECNAV Ray Mabus has signed the Naval Innovation Network (NIN) Charter, formalizing the enduring legacy of Task Force Innovation (TFI). As identified in the Department of the Navy (DON) Innovation Vision, the NIN is a critical enabler for the DON in a world increasingly defined by speed and information sharing. It serves to rapidly connect people, ideas, and information with the goal of maintaining and advancing the operational advantages of our Naval Services.

WEST BETHESDA, Md. (NNS) -- Seaplanes were flying high in West Bethesda, Maryland, in the auditorium of Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division while sixth-grade students from the Mount Washington School in Baltimore participated in the Seaplane Challenge on Nov. 28. The Challenge is one of the many activities Carderock hosts to promote science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).


The Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) issued a data challenge throughout the organization just 9 months ago. The results are now in and the findings merit sharing. The Data Challenge called for our teammates to answer the question “Using historic data (e.g., parts, reliability, aircraft usage rates, repair rates, and sparing data), develop a visualization tool and algorithms to determine which parts need immediate attention and which should be added to a watch list.”

Twentynine Palms -- Marines with 7th Marine Regiment and Combat Logistics Company 13 took on the opportunity to learn 3D printing at 1st Tank Battalion's classrooms Nov. 14-16, 2016. "I'm a firm believer in giving the warfighters as many tools as possible at their disposal," said Brad Halsey, CEO and founder, Building Momentum. "With this class they are able to engineer solutions on the battlefield that might otherwise take months or years to solve."


SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- A team from the Navy's Undersea Integration Program Office (PMW 770) was selected for the 2016 Innovation Excellence Acquisition Team of the Year award by Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development and Acquisition (ASN RD&A).


Rear Adm. Frederick “Fritz” J. Roegge, Commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet (CSP), joined industry partners to cut the ribbon officially opening the CSP Innovation Lab (iLab), Nov. 7. Roegge announced the opening of the CSP iLab at Naval Submarine Training Center Pacific (NSTCP). The CSP iLab is an unclassified space created to allow submarine sailors to prototype Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies to generate ideas for low-cost solutions to fleet training and operational challenges.

A Navy scientist was awarded for his groundbreaking research on a new form of quantum mechanical energy, Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) announced Nov. 29. Dr. Dan Parks received the 2016 NSWCDD In-house Laboratory Independent Research (ILIR) Excellence Award for his research over the course of ten years on weak energy and its properties.


With technology, computing power, and data accessibility improving at breakneck speeds, most industries have long since realized the opportunities and insights that data analysis can provide -- from professional sports franchises and consumer goods companies to organizations within the U.S. government, including the Department of the Navy (DON). Capt Benjamin Gallo, FY17 SECNAV Innovation Advisor, provides a preview of his exciting research into the possibility of a new, cohesive DON data vision and strategy; how existing unit-level data projects are forging the path forward; and recommendations on the way ahead to a pilot analytic effort within the Secretariat.
